Last week, I was honored when one of my friends and fellow bloggers presented me with the Stylish Blogger award.
You might be thinking, what is the point of that? After the initial surprise of “Yay, I won something!” that’s exactly what I was thinking. As I told Sandra, I tend to think these awards are a little funny. Sweet, of course, but also kind of funny. Bloggers giving other bloggers made-up awards and all.
Then, in her wise and simple way, Sandra reminded me that all awards are, in fact, “made-up.” They are something created by members of a community or organization to give recognition to one another. After all, I think it is safe to say that most of us appreciate recognition for our hard work and contributions, especially when given by those we respect and admire. Furthermore, awards provide added incentive to keep excelling and pushing forward.
There are awards for all types of people and purpose. The best entertainers. Deserving employees. Military heroes. Winners of competitions. And let’s not forget the very first awards we ever gave out…the “best mom ever” and “greatest dad in the world” awards for birthdays and holidays!
Awards can be a fun and beautiful way to say thank you, to the ones we love for “doing what they do best.” They are a way to pat our friends on the back, and to say, “I like what you’re doing. Keep up the good work!”
Thank you Sandra for your friendship, for thinking of me, and for this lovely pat on the back!
If you don’t already know Sandra, she is a remarkably sophisticated, compassionate, and gracious woman, and an eloquent writer to boot! She pours her many gifts into the simple wisdom for inner wellness that she offers on Always Well Within. When I’m in the need for greater balance and serenity in my life, Sandra is always a wonderful friend to turn to.
What does “Stylish” mean anyway?
Stylish is often used to describe something fashionable. The way I see it, fashion is a matter of personal taste. I find hiking pants, zip-up fleeces, and Vibram five-fingers to be quite fashionable, although some of my better-dressed friends might disagree. Furthermore, style typically denotes an air of class, sharpness, and pizazz. It describes something polished and snazzy. Oddly enough, none of those are words that resonate with me very well.
But drop the “ish” and style can take on quite a different meaning. It can be used to refer to someone’s behavior, characteristics, or their “cup of tea,” if you will. In a sense, each of us is stylish in our own way. We have our own way of doing and seeing things. It’s part of what makes us special and unique.
Speaking of unique…
If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re my family, a friend, a fellow blogger interested in growing and gaining wisdom, or someone awesome who just so happened to stop by. Whatever the case, I want to share with you 5 more friends of mine who are a continuous source of inspiration. Their writing helps to open my heart and mind to new ways of thinking and being. I’d like to take this opportunity to recommend them to you and encourage you to stop by their corners of the blogosphere, because they add tremendous value to my life, and could potentially do the same for yours.
I know you’ve probably seen these names here a few times before, but that’s because these are the people who continuously draw me in for more. Each of these incredible people has a style that is uniquely their own and something valuable to share.
So, without further ado, it’s my honor to present the Stylish Blogger award to these friends and fabulous bloggers:
1. Robin Easton – Robin’s style is infused with love and purity of heart. When I read her writing on Naked in Eden, I am deeply aware of her love for and connection with all of nature. I’ve never actually met Robin, but in a strange sense, I feel as though we’ve known each other forever. Perhaps it’s her unique ability to tap into the universal stream of love. I get the feeling that if I ever do meet Robin, our time will be spent rolling around in a fit of laughter. Watch some of the videos on her blog…you’ll know exactly what I mean! Robin definitely has a unique style, and she isn’t afraid to march to the beat of her own drum! That’s definitely what she did during her time living in the wild Australian rainforest! (If you’re interested in learning more about Robin’s adventures in the rainforest, I’ll be writing about my experience reading her incredible book, Naked in Eden, in an upcoming post!)
2. Katie Tallo – Katie’s blog, Momentum Gathering, is one of my favorites to visit because of her simple and honest style. Katie is unforgiving about being her bold and brazen self, which is wonderfully refreshing. She has been a true inspiration to me on my blogging journey. If you’re not already a faithful reader, be sure to check out her writing! I know you’ll get just as much insight and peace from it as I do.
3. Farnoosh Brock – Speaking of style, this lady has it in the truest definition of the word! Farnoosh’s writing is like statuesque artwork, carved out of personality and glossed with elegance and class. Moreover, her blog is beautifully decorated with all of her own photography, which adds so much to her creative style. Perhaps most importantly, I am deeply impressed by the time and care she gives to each and every one of her readers. Each of her posts is like a piece of herself, gift-wrapped especially for you. Prolific living truly says it all!
4. Evita Ochel – I resonate with Evita’s holistic and truth-seeking style on so many levels! She runs not one, but three incredible blogs, all centered on helping you to expand your heart and mind, and become the highest version of yourself. When you read her writing, you will immediately see that her heart and mind are unconstrained. She has a way of subtly encouraging you to look deeper into yourself and to awaken to all that you are capable of becoming. For a taste of what I’m talking about, visit her over at Evolving Beings.
5. Lance Ekum – Wacky, fun, compassionate, and sincere…these are just a few of a long list of words I could come up with to describe Lance’s one-of-a-kind style! I’ve never met anyone as willing as he is to open himself up and share his love with EVERYONE. As I started out on this blogging journey, Lance took it upon himself to take me under his wing and make me feel welcome. I have a feeling that I’m just one of many in a sea of grateful people who have been touched by his love and kindness. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss out on the wisdom this man has to share over at Jungle of Life!
Who would be on your list of stylish friends? Is there someone out there who inspires you? Who adds value to your life? Is there someone you think deserves a pat on the back?
Well, what are you waiting for? You don’t need a made-up award to tell someone how much they mean to you. Find that person and tell them how awesome they are. I guarantee you’ll make somebody’s day!
The rest of the deal
In addition to the back-patting and passing-on of the Stylish Blogger award, there’s one more little catch that comes along with it. Recipients are asked to share 7 little known facts about themselves. In the spirit of being a good sport, I’m happy to play along. Here it is folks:
7 fun facts you might not know about me
- I’m actually pretty nerdy. No, not World of Warcraft nerdy, but I do have a tattoo written in Elvish on my ankle. If you have any idea what I’m talking about, you’re probably a bit of a nerd too.
- I’m not a fan of tomatoes. No matter how hard I’ve tried to like them, they still taste bad (with the exception of grape tomatoes…which are pretty darn good).
- I have an unnatural fear of bees, and I’m still afraid of the dark. But, I’m working on both of these!!
- I have been collecting stuffed teddy bears since I was a little kid. All of my favorite teddies (and one Moo Cow) are displayed on a shelf above my dresser.
- I set national powerlifting records my junior and senior year of high school. (You can check ‘em out here under Adrienne Hickey).
- I have a really keen sense of smell, and so I typically connect with people, animals, and places through their scent.
- Guilty pleasures…Pretty Woman, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and The Last Unicorn are three of my all-time favorite movies!

Power lifting and teddy bears … I love that about you Adrienne. Thanks so much for including me in this lovely list of wonderful people. I’m humbled and shall definitely share the love. Nothing wrong with a few kudos once in a while. xo

Haha, thanks Katie! It was definitely my pleasure to include you here. I look forward to seeing who you pass the kudos to.
Dear Nerd-Girl,
(I say that with affection!)
Oh…and I’ve been called that too (well…without the “girl” part I referenced in the greeting!!)…by my kids!!!
…and we diverge…
I *love* tomatoes!!!
You know what else you’re reminding me of? I have this squat rack down the basement that has been calling my name (I know…strange that an iron structure can talk…I thought so too at first, now I’m actually getting used to it). Maybe it’s time for me and Mr. Squat Rack (he has such an original name, doesn’t he!) to become re-acquainted…
Vibram Five Fingers? I think they look way cool!!! So…stylish indeed!!
…as you always are, sweet friend!!
Thank YOU for gifting me with this wonderful award!
By the way, you might want to highlight May 25th on your calendar…it’s Nerd Pride Day!!! (we shall celebrate together!!)

Lance
The latest wisdom shared by Lance: Laugh and Get Rich
LOL!!! It’s funny…since I work in a research lab, I work with a LOT of nerds, so sometimes I fool myself into thinking I’m kinda cool. Then when I’m back in normal company, I remember that I’m actually a pretty big nerd.
I had no idea there was an actual day dedicated to nerds. Don’t let me forget, we’ll have to come up with something extra special for that!!
P.s. I think you might be just a bit nerdier than me…(just sayin)
Sending LOTS of LOVE your way!!
Hi Adrienne,
Your post made my heart smile..is it your writing style?..the fact that you love bears and dislike bees?…or that I’ve wanted to be Maid Marion (for the costume, archery skills and overall fun in the woods)…
You have style in abundance…and your list of friends are all most stylish as well:)
When someone inspires me, or their presence enriches my life..I let them know because so often people wonder if they do indeed make a difference. Especially in the blogging community, where one may invest energy, yet not immediately “see” results. In life, mega watt heart smiles motivate me to share..and a “thank you, you do matter” is a usually a way to elicit that mega watt heart smile!
Dear Joy, I’m glad, because you’re response made me smile! Your comment about Maid Marion reminded me of more silly facts about me! I loved off-the-wall costumes when I was little. I even went as Prince Caspian one year, before non-nerdy kids knew who that was.
Did you ever dress up as Maid Marion?? It’s never too late…
I like your approach of letting people know when they inspire you…I always try to do the same. And Joy, you DO make a difference!
Adrienne,
I concur wholeheartedly with your thoughts on style. We all have our own unique style and its most stylish to be YOU!
I have an unnatural fear of birds. Its’ the birds and the bees! We’d make a beautiful team navigate the world together to avoid these flying creatures. I’m not afraid of bees, but I’ve become far more sensitive to bees stings in recent years and so I do keep an eye our and circumvent them consciously.
I also have an acute sense of smell that has gone off the deep end!
It’s fun to learn these tidbits about you, one of my favorite charming bloggers of all time.

Hi Sandra,
Haha, the birds and the bees…love it! It’s definitely been great getting to know more about you as well…I seriously learn so much from you, and I’m so touched by your sweet compliments!!
Thank you again for “back patting,” it feels good both to receive and to keep giving!
The purpose of giving an award is to recognise someone’s efforts. The recognition brings encouragement and often inspires others to do their best efforts in whatever they are doing.
I send my congratulations and encouragement to keep up your good and inspiring work

Dear Adrienne
I am coming a little late to the “award party”, but nonetheless bringing lots of hugs, flowers and spring water for everyone
First off, I love the question you posed, and Sandra’s wise reply. The awards are cute in and of themselves, and I think they can give us a nice way to further connect with each other. And so congratulations on yours and many, many, many thanks for sharing this also with me, and the other bloggers you listed.
You know how I feel now… it really isn’t about the award, what it is, or what we have to do, but about the fact that someone thought of us. Someone reached out and out of all the things they could have been doing, decided to share their time and space with us… and on top of that, share the love and kindness they feel about us.
I am truly and deeply touched!
Thank you for your loving spirit

The latest wisdom shared by Evita: CWSS- What Are Some Ways to Feel & See Our Spirit Guides
Hi Evita,
So wonderful to hear from you! Yes, I was definitely thinking of you. I think we have so much in common and so much to learn from one another…we’ve only begun to scratch the surface there, and I so look forward to getting to know you better as we continue on this journey!
You have come so far, given so much, and created something truly special with your blog. It’s awesome people like you and the others I’ve shared here that inspire to keep pushing forward, and who prove how “worth it” this experience can be.
Dearest Adrienne,
I sooooo apologize for not having been here sooner. Well, I’ve actually been here a few times but not had the time I wanted to respond to this in the way I wanted to. My blog was badly hacked and I was waaaay behind in everything while trying to save it. It took me a month to get it sorted out.
Although I know you have moved onto other posts (and you don’t need to respond to this), but I HAD to come and tell you what this meant to me. I went through several rough weeks, for a whole host of reasons (the blog being hacked would have been enough on it’s own)
So when I saw this post I sat with tears in my eyes. I just want to reach through the computer screen and hug you, tell you what a special and beautiful soul you are.
You’ve no idea what this means to me, coming from you. I find you SO remarkable. Here you are in the military, and soooooo strong, and have done things that I will probably never have to due, like funeral duty (can’t exactly remember what you call that), and I’m sure you’ve done many other things, which might harden the hearts of most people. In fact I know men in the service who became very hardened from being asked to handle such tasks. Yet YOU remain soooooo sensitive, compassionate, even gentle of spirit and soul. I am forever amazed by that. You have retained your innocence of spirit, love of life, and hope. So many people lose that, and become very jaded. You have not.
You not only haven’t lost your innocence, you foster it in other people, just in being yourself. You really do. It is one of your greatest strengths. How amazing that innocence and openness can be a great strength. I love that. It makes you a leader. In your lifetime you will teach (just through being true to yourself) so many others to remember, and reclaim their innocence.
Innocence does not mean that we have not had trials, even horrors happen to us in our lives. It simply means that we have STILL remained open to life, heart, love, promise of hope, and new beginnings.
You, my precious friend, are like Spring itself. I come here, or only SEE your face or name somewhere else, and my heart bursts with joy, pride, and love for you. You are a truly a great soul. Never, EVER, forget that their are those in the world who see you and deeply value who you are. I am one of them.
Much love to you, and thank you for having the courage to be YOU.
Robin
PS I loved your 7 things. They just made me smile. I HAD to see the powerlifting page. WOW!! That is so soooooooooooooooooooooooooo AWESOME. I am laughing my face off with joy for you. I just got out my rowing maching and am hoping to build my upper body for kayaking this summer. Man, you INSPIRE me!!!!!!!!!! LOLOL!! I am floored by you. WOW!!!
